Challenge
- Proper diagnosis of cancer requires expert pathologist review of the patient’s suspected cancerous tumor biopsy slide.
- But this task can be done only by MD pathologist who are very less in number and available mostly in bigger cities.
- This severe shortage of pathologists creates a major bottleneck in the healthcare system and makes cancer diagnosis very inaccessible to the whole population.
- Hence patients from smaller towns and villages first struggle to find a pathologist and then finally travel to bigger cities, and then again wait a long time for his report.
- 50-70% of cancer cases are detected only at an advanced stage.
- This long delay in diagnosis first causes patient’s cancer to progress unchecked causing avoidable complications and his treatment to start much later and hence his survival chances reduces significantly.
Solution
- There is an immediate need to make cancer diagnosis accessible to the whole population.
- Digital Pathology technology makes this possible by allowing pathology slides of patient tumor biopsies to be viewed and reported remotely by expert pathologists.
- Senior pathologists in bigger cities can instantly give their expert diagnosis.
- This way correct cancer diagnosis can be greatly speeded up and will save lot of patient lives.
Digital Pathology Framework
Scanners of appropriate capacity need to be placed in:
- District Hospitals.
- General Hospitals.
- Sub-District Hospitals &
- Rural Hospitals.
Local or Cloud Storage Server need to be placed at a command center.
Digital Pathology Project Design
- District Hospitals supported by a Command Centers in Cities.
Items to procure :
- Scanners of suitable capacity and Workstations for District Hospitals.
- Local Server with Data Storage in Command Centers or Cloud Server Subscription.
Scanner & Storage Selection
- For up to 75 slides per day, OS-15: a 15-slide scanner is suitable.
- From 76 to 225 slides daily, OS-120: a 120-slide scanner with automatic slide loader is suitable.
- From 226 slides upwards daily, OS-Ultra 80/160/320/480, a high-speed scanner with different auto-loaders are suitable.
- A high magnification 40x digital image of 15x15 mm tissue is of average 900 MB size.
- A low magnification 20X digital image of 15x15 mm tissue is of average 300 MB size.
- Local or Cloud Server Storage needs to be procured calculating the required storage as per total slide load handled.
- Duration of digital storage needs to be decided as per requirement.
